Mighty Midget
To be sold at Mecum Indianapolis on 5/12 as lot J120.1 with NO RESERVE
Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this 6,930 original mile 1979 MG Midget 1500!
The Midget was offered by British Leyland under the MG brand from 1961 to 1979 as a bridge between the Austin-Healey Sprite and the MGA. Its 18-year production run spanned four generations of the Midget with 1974-1979 being the last. It was branded the “Midget 1500” as it received the 1.5L inline 4-cylinder from the Triumph Spitfire. The engine was rated at 50hp and 67 lb. ft. of torque for the U.S. market version and was coupled to a Morris Marina fully synchronized 4-speed manual transmission and offered a top speed of 100mph.
This Midget 1500 is finished in Inca Yellow over a black interior and was sold new at James Mears Motors in 1979 in Lubbock, TX to a gentleman from Lubbock, TX. It remained with the original owner for the next 42 years until 9/2/2021 when it was sold by the original owner to its second private owner, also of Lubbock, TX. On 6/23/2022 a vintage car dealer based in Lubbock, TX acquired it from the second owner, in which, we acquired it from that dealer a short time ago and enclosed shipped it to our facility in Livonia, MI where it currently presents with 6,930 original miles. This is an all original well cared for example that has never left Lubbock, Texas until our acquisition.
The paint and interior are in very good original condition with just a handful of minor paint imperfections as documented in the photo deck. It runs and drives fantastic as all it required upon our acquisition was an alignment which we had our vendor Plymouth Garage in Plymouth, MI perform. All the electronics work properly including the original RCA AM/FM radio which receives excellent reception. Examine the all the photos and you’ll find yourself appreciating the fantastic originality of this example.
Included in the sale is the original soft top boot cover, the original cockpit cover, the original RCA radio manual, one set of original keys, the original spare, the original tools, and a copy of the original 1979 issued Texas title. This is a cannot miss opportunity as they are only original once!
